Combo Nut (Differential Nut / Step Nut) A combo nut (also called differential nut or step nut) is a specialized fastener designed to connect two bolts or threaded rods of different diameters within a single unit. Key Features: Dual Thread Design Combines two different thread sizes (e.g., M8 on one end, M10 on the other) in one nut. Eliminates the need for adapters or additional components. Materials & Finishes Common materials: Carbon steel (Grade 4.8) Surface treatments: Zinc-plated, hot-dip galvanized (HDG), or plain. Applications: Pipe fittings, scaffolding, and structural joints. Machinery where threaded rod sizes change abruptly. Electrical/telecom installations requiring diameter transitions. |

1. Tools Required: Adjustable wrench or socket set
Thread locker [optional]
Torque wrench (if precise tightening is required)
2. Installation Steps
Step 1: Inspect Threads
Ensure both bolts/threaded rods are clean, undamaged, and match the combo nut's thread sizes (e.g., M8side → M8 bolt, M10 side → M10 bolt).
Step 2: Hand-Start Threading
Screw the larger-diameter side of the combo nut onto its corresponding bolt first by hand to avoid cross-threading.
Repeat for the smaller-diameter side, turning counterclockwise until threads engage, then tighten clockwise.
Step 3: Final Tightening
Use a wrench to tighten both sides evenly. Avoid over-torquing to prevent thread stripping.
Recommended torque: Refer to manufacturer specs (e.g., Grade 8.8 steel: ~30-40 Nm for M12).
For vibration resistance, apply thread locker to threads before installation.
Step 4: Verify Alignment
Ensure connected bolts/rods are axially aligned to prevent bending stress.
3. Safety Notes
Do NOT use combo nuts for load-bearing structural joints unless certified by an engineer.
Avoid mixing metric/imperial threads. Confirm thread standards (ISO/ANSI) before installation.
4. Maintenance
Periodically check for loosening in high-vibration environments.
Replace if threads are worn or corroded.
